Kaatrin Mozhi 2018 Movie Review: A feel-good, happy family entertainer

Critick's Rating: 4/5

When was the last time you enjoyed a feel-good, happy family entertainer made with honesty and passion? Director Radha Mohan helms the Tamil version of that Super hit Hindi film Tumhari Sulu and the biggest positive is that it seldom deviates from the original blueprint and whatever minor nativity changes and few comedy scenes added makes it more refreshing.

Vijayalakshmi aka Viji (Jyotika) is an interesting, middle class house wife who has not completed her 12th exam inspite of attempting at it thrice. She is confident, and is desperately trying to find her identity. Her sisters (Sindhu Shekharan and Seema Taneja) and dad (Mohan Ram) taunt her whenever the family meets, as her achievements aren’t typically noteworthy like winning lemon-and-spoon race, random lucky draws or TV contests.

But Viji's biggest supporter and cheer leader is her school-going son and loving husband Balu (Vidharth) who encourages her to take part in such competitions and talking about new business ideas. Viji's life turns into a roller-coaster ride when she arrives at a radio station to collect a prize which she won. She ends up as a night RJ, talking huskily to strangers about love and more. With her natural way of talking and support of her boss (Lakshmi Manchu), Madhu as she is known on Radio becomes famous too fast. The film then deals with the drastic changes to her mundane life, as she walks the tightrope between her overnight fame and her domestic demands.

The biggest plus of Kaatrin Mozhi is the knockout performance of Jyotika as a middle-class housewife with an infectious optimism. It's hard not to succumb to her effervescence and indefatigable can-do spirit. Vidharth as a normal man who is crazy about his wife and trying his best to make her happy but is insecure at his workplace is superb and his chemistry with Jyotika is so natural, easy and infectious.

All the supporting cast is in top form especially, Kumaravel as the self-styled revolutionary poet forced to write jingles for Appalams and MS Baskar as the lonely old man. The comedy scenes of Mayilsamy is a scream and the cameo of STR and Yogi Babu adds to the entertainment quotient. The songs by A. H. Kaashif are passable with Kelambitale Vijayalakshmi and Dirty Pondatti being the pick of the album. Camera by Mahesh Muthuswami makes the film look rich. Technically the film is sound and the production values are good.

On the whole, Kaatrin Mozhi has its beautiful moments and we recommend you to take your family or loved ones and enjoy the weekend at the cinemas.

Reactions from social media sridevi sreedhar @sridevisreedhar #KaatrinMozhi: Funny, emotional & clever all rolled into one. Such a joy 2 watch #Jyotika who is dependably feisty yet achingly vulnerable, breathing life into the conflicted Vijayalakshmi aka Viji aka Madhu. Lucky to have watched #KaatrinMozhi sitting next to #Jo & #RadhaMohan
